Good day everyone. Today's post is from Women's Day Magazine. I found some good articles and wanted to share them with you.
Summer Myths Busted.
How many times have you heard your mom tell you things on what not to do that sounded believable but turns out they were said just to keep you safe, in all honesty they probably heard them from their mom's and so on. I have been guilty of using some of these on my own children just cause I thought it was the right thing to do. It still may be right for your family it certainly won't hurt anyone. I will leave this up to you and your judgement as I wanted to get what I found out to the public and also share some of my own experiences with you.
myth 1. Always wait an hour after eating before going swimming.
I still hear this one and use it, it is basically use your best judgement on each situation.
truth: If your child is going to the pool to play then there is no need for them to sit out. There's no evidence that eating right before swimming will increase the risks of cramps or drowning. That said strenuous swimming like laps, soon after eating could interfere with digestion and lead to stomachaches.
myth 2. A t-shirt over a bathing suit blocks out the sun. Yes I am guilt of this one too.
truth: A white t-shirt has the SPF of 3. So basically you need to apply sunscreen 20 Min's before going into the sun and reapply after swimming. The sun is a lot stronger than when we were little so protect your babies and teach them how to take care of their own bodies when the sun is involved.
myth 3. poison ivy rashes are contagious.
truth: it's the oil from the plant that causes the red, itchy rash; once you wash it off your not contagious. So always have kids wash off arms, legs, feet and hands with soap and water after playing in the woods.
myth 4: Sparklers are a safe alternate to fireworks. Ya that's what some people say but I won't let my kids do them alone until they are at least 7 yrs old. Basically it comes down to parental supervision and proper teaching to your children; using common sense.
Truth: They are NOT. two-thirds of sparkler related injuries were in child 5 and younger.
I hope some of these little finds were helpful, if not just comment and ask what questions you have and I will be happy to look them up for you. I hope you all have a safe and fun filled Independence Day.
God Bless,
Rose

I had no idea a t-shirt did that little. I think I will be putting sunblock on my kids, then dressing them before playing outside.
